John Richards is one of Karate's unsung heroes. He is one of the many Karateka who, because they chose not to enter the competition arena have not had national fame bestowed upon them. Nevertheless, John is one hell of a fighter in the real sense, not just a tap, tap point scorer. Since he got started in Karate fifteen years ago John has constantly sought to capture the true meaning of Karate-Do, both on the mental plane as well as the physical one. His biggest influence has been Kanazawa Sensei. "To me" ,John says "He has always been the epitomy of all that Shotokan Karate stands for, a giant amongst men." Although John likes all Martial Arts, his own style of Shotokan suits him best. His personal training has always embodied deep breathing and muscle control which he calls "Dynamic Power". This combined with the deep stances and 'long' techniques have helped to develop tremendous strength and mental discipline. If you observe any of the top Japanese masters he says that you will not fail to notice their tremendous power and control over their bodies. Many Karateka are technically proficient, but how many have real power. In John's opinion there is no need to take up weight lifting to develop "Dynamic power", as it can be attained with correct Karate training.
