Making basic Karate work with John Richards

martial arts illustrated The importance of basics cannot be denied - they are the foundation of Karate. John Richards puts great emphasis on perfecting the performance of basic movements throughout the grades. He believes that good Karate can only be achieved through good basics.

Basics are of course indispensable for the beginner, they are the gateway to Karate-do. It can take months of persistent effort to train muscles to perform the most fundamental stances and movements, even if the beginner is experienced in other sports or disciplines. At John Richard's schools a great deal of emphasis is placed on stance and particularly on the depth of stance from which is derived the power in blocking and punching and the ability to get under and uproot an opponents attack.

Through basics, the novice is also introduced to the discipline of Zen-Shin, training the mind as well as the body to control what might at first feel like difficult and complex combinations of movements, and introduce him or her to the fighting spirit and etiquette we develop in Karate. By going through the movements and combinations slowly and methodically, the student gains confidence and becomes conscious of the movement in detail and it's purpose.
