For instance John Richards emphasises the positioning of the knee when raised to attack, all blows issuing from the same stance so that there is no forewarning as to which type of kick will follow. Stance must be low and strong and even the simple act of stepping needs to be studied if you are to move without losing posture and power.

Whatever is leaned in basics is displayed in kata. Whether the student is a novice or a black belt there are no short cuts in basics that will not effect the performance of kata. The refinement of Hara, the physical and spiritual centre of balance, and kime, the focusing of power in the basics is paralleled in kata. The simplicity of the basic movements is echoed by the simplicity of the spiritual attitude even in the most complex kata. And this is the Karate-do.
